Parramatta prepares for light rail construction

06 July 2018

George Street in the Parramatta CBD will become two-way and O’Connell Street will be widened to four lanes as part of road and traffic changes ahead of Parramatta Light Rail construction.

The Diona Ward Joint Venture (comprising Diona Pty Ltd and Ward Civil & Environmental Engineering Pty Ltd) has been appointed to deliver the ‘Enabling Works’ contract which encompasses the relocation of underground utilities, the modification or installation of traffic lights, road widening, the redirection of traffic flows and changes to parking.

These works, while not directly along the Parramatta Light Rail route, intend to increase traffic capacity to ensure traffic can move in and around the Parramatta area during construction and, later, operations of light rail.

The Parramatta Light Rail project team will continue to keep the community, and impacted businesses and residents informed on the project, and will provide plenty of notice before construction of the Enabling Works begins in late 2018.

Parramatta Light Rail will provide frequent, reliable, ‘turn up and go’ light rail services for the Greater Parramatta region, with around 28,000 people getting on and off every day by 2026.
